Type is argued to be formed through a process of reducing a complex array of formal types down to a common root form.
Here the author introduces two facts explaining how the formative process of a typology is not just a statistical process but one in which there are formal ends being sought.
Firstly, architectural typologies are tied to their configuration and secondly, architectural typologies fall into three categories, the complete configuration of a building, major structural elements, and decorative design.
Argon closes with the belief that typological and creative aspects of architecture are intricately linked with the creative aspect being a response to the demands of the historical and social typological aspect.
He introduces the process reducing a complex of formal variants to a common root form and two salient factors in the process, which are the physical functions and the configuration. He also cites the example of how the new type is created.
